Mucosal vaccine development in the context of Controlled Human Infection Model (CHIM)

COVID-19 vaccines cannot prevent infection, though they are thought to prevent severe disease. Failure to prevent infection has made COVID-19 persist in vaccinated
individuals, all in the face of low vaccination rates in sub-Saharan Africa. The need for vaccines that can prevent COVID-19 infection cannot be over emphasised. Mucosal vaccines are believed to have the ability to prevent infection and controlled human infection models (CHIMs) when deployed have potential to fast track the development of these vaccines. To this end, the talk will address the immunology of mucosal vaccines and the role of CHIM in the African and global contexts.
