In line with our commitment to advancing lung health
research, clinical care, and training in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Makerere
University Lung Institute proudly donated a spirometer, along with a
calibration syringe and mouthpieces, to the Chest Clinic at Kiruddu National
Referral Hospital. This contribution aims to facilitate the accurate diagnosis
of lung-related diseases, ensuring appropriate treatment for patients in need.

The equipment was formally handed over to Dr. Charles
Kabugo, the Hospital Director, by Dr. Ivan Kimuli, Head of the Lung Institute
Clinic, and Simon Mugambe, Head of Operations at the Lung Institute. Dr. Kabugo
expressed gratitude for the donation, acknowledging its significant impact on
improving diagnostic capabilities amid the rising number of lung-related
complications observed at the facility.
The Chest Clinic at Kiruddu National Referral Hospital
attends to an average of 30 to 50 patients daily, many of whom present with
respiratory issues. Robert Buyungo, the Spirometry Technician at the clinic,
noted the challenges posed by outdated equipment and welcomed the support.
“The equipment we have is quite outdated; this donation is really going to
support the team,” he remarked.

Buyungo emphasized the importance of the vitalograph machine
donated by the Lung Institute, highlighting its advanced features. He
anticipates that this high-end equipment will not only aid in disease
prevention but also contribute to improving respiratory health outcomes for
patients.
Spirometry tests are not widely conducted across many
facilities in Uganda. At the Lung Institute, the test is available for a fee of
100,000 UGX, with demand consistently high, averaging over 50 tests conducted
daily. Dr. Ivan Kimuli stressed the importance of raising awareness about lung
health and the necessity of clean air for healthy lungs. “Ugandans need to
understand the risks associated with the quality of air they breathe if we are
to make improvements,” he explained.
In an effort to broaden its scope of services and enhance
diagnostic capabilities, the Lung Institute has expanded its range of lung
function tests. These now include Bronchoscopy, Prick tests, sleep tests, among
others, all conducted by skilled professionals using state-of-the-art
facilities.
This expansion represents a significant step forward in the
Institute’s mission to advance lung health research, clinical care, and
training in Sub-Saharan Africa. By incorporating a wider array of diagnostic
tests, the Institute aims to provide comprehensive care to patients, ensuring timely
and accurate diagnosis of various respiratory conditions.
Bronchoscopy, Prick tests, and sleep tests are crucial tools
in diagnosing a range of lung-related disorders, from infections to allergic
reactions and sleep-related breathing disorders. With the addition of these
tests, patients can benefit from a more thorough evaluation of their
respiratory health, leading to more targeted and effective treatment plans.
The Lung Institute’s commitment to excellence is reflected
in its investment in skilled professionals and cutting-edge facilities. By
offering a comprehensive suite of lung function tests, the Institute continues
to set a high standard for respiratory care in the region, ultimately improving
outcomes for patients and advancing the field of lung health research

Uganda has witnessed a steady increase in lung infections affecting both the young and old, with many experiencing irreversible effects. The donation from the Makerere University Lung Institute represents a proactive step towards addressing this pressing health issue, aiming to enhance diagnostic capabilities and ultimately improve lung health outcomes for all.
