Makerere University Lung Institute has received 6 Spirometers and accessories including 3 calibration syringes, 50 BV filters, from Vitalograph bringing the total number of spirometers to 8.
The Donation was received by the Head of Clinical services Dr Ivan Kimuli, Head of Operations Simon Mugambe and the Director Dr Bruce Kirenga.
Dr Ivan Kimuli says this now brings the total number of Spirometers at the institute to 8 which is expected to improve turn around time and also meet the patient demands for the service.
“We perform over 200 tests per month in our facility, but the majority of facilities in the country have no access to spirometry” Kimuli Noted
The Lung institute has seen its patients’ numbers rise from a paltry 50 a week to over 200 with both children and adults in need of lung health care.
What is Spirometry
Spirometry is a type of pulmonary function test used to determines how well your lungs work by measuring how much air goes into and out of your lungs when you breathe.
It is used to used to diagnose diseases like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other conditions that affect breathing.
