Dr. Rebecca Nantanda leads session on Asthma management among Children

MAKERERE UNIVERSITY LUNG INSTITUTE SPEARHEADS VITAL MENTORSHIP PROGRAM TO COMBAT CHRONIC RESPIRATORY DISEASE

Physicians from Makerere University Lung Institute (MLI) recently embarked on a pivotal journey to Nakaseke General Hospital as part of the PEN-Plus project, with a core mission to bolster the capacity of health facilities in managing Chronic Respiratory Diseases (CRDs) like asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Led by Dr. Rebecca Nantanda, Dr. Alupo Patricia, and Sister Susan Aketch, the team embarked on a mentorship visit, collaborating closely with onsite teams at Nakaseke Hospital to delve into care of patients with CRDs.

 

During their visit at Nakaseke Hospital, the trio first conducted Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions on asthma and COPD, and later participated in clinical care of patients, working together with and mentoring the onsite staff. This immersive experience underscored the essential role of proactive management in mitigating the impact of NCDs within local healthcare settings.

The PEN-Plus p Pilot project stands as a pioneering endeavor, aimed at fortifying the skills of healthcare providers across general hospitals to navigate the complexities of NCD management. Dr. Rebecca Nantanda expressed optimism regarding the initiative, noting that the motivation and interest of medical teams to participate in the mentorship program. This heightened enthusiasm augurs well for the sustainability and efficacy of future interventions aimed at combating the prevalence of NCDs.
