Background
Makerere University Lung Institute (MLI) is a center of excellence for Lung Health in the College of
Health Sciences, Makerere University. Our mission is lung health research that integrates disease
prevention, clinical care and training in sub-Saharan Africa. MLI therefore seeks to recruit a nurse to
support service delivery at the Lung Institute Clinic (LIC).
Job Title: Nurse (1)
Reports to: Head of Clinical Services
Engagement: Fulltime
Duration: 1 year, renewable upon satisfactory performance
Job Summary: He/ She will play a crucial role in providing high-quality nursing care to our patients. He/
She will be responsible for delivering compassionate and patient-centered care, assisting in clinical
procedures, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to ensure the well-being of patients and their
families.
Duties and responsibilities
- Recording patients’ vital signs and medical information and progress
- Preparing patients and assisting with treatments, surgery, or tests as needed
- Providing care to patients based on their care plan outlined by their doctor
- Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of patients’ care, and medication administration
- Re-evaluating patient care plans as conditions change and notify appropriate nursing and medical
staff to changes in the patient’s status - Performing adherence counselling and other counselling needed by the patients
- Fostering a supportive and compassionate environment to care for patients and their families
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professionalism at all times
- Ensuring storage and disposal of medication is carried out according to policy
- Supporting research teams operating in the clinic
- Performing other nursing duties such as organising the clinic, dusting, patient cleaning whenever
needed. - Participate in team meetings and contribute to the development of patient care strategies.
- Prepare regular reports on all assigned duties
Qualifications & Skills:
- Diploma in Nursing from a recognized institution.
- Valid nursing license from the appropriate regulatory body
- In-depth knowledge of health and safety guidelines and procedures (sanitation, decontamination
etc.) and willingness to follow them at all times - Outstanding organizational and multi-tasking skills
- Patient with excellent problem-solving skills
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Mentorship skills
- Computer literate
- Ability to cope in a crisis
- Excellent clinical and observational skills.
