Makerere University Lung Institute (MLI) is a center of excellence for Lung Health in the College of Health Sciences, Makerere University. Our mission is lung health research that integrates disease prevention, clinical care, and training in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Institute has received funding in its Clinical Trials Unit from LMU Klinikum, University College London, and John Hopkins University to conduct clinical trials titled “ A multiple arm, multiple stage (MAMS), phase 2B/C, open label, randomized, controlled platform trial to evaluate experimental arms including an increased dose of rifampicin, an optimized dose of pyrazinamide, moxifloxacin and sutezolid, in adult subjects with newly diagnosed, smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis (STEP 2C)”; “Platform Assessing Regimens And Durations In a Global Multisite consortium for TB (PARADIGM4TB)” and Bedaquiline Roll-out Evidence in Contacts and People Living With HIV to prevent TB (BREACH-TB) respectively. The studies aim to identify newer, shorter, safer, and more efficacious innovations for the prevention and treatment of drug-susceptible and drug-resistant tuberculosis. The Institute now seeks to recruit suitably qualified Ugandans to join a team of existing clinical trialists for the positions indicated below.
Position Trial Nurse (2)
Reports to Study Coordinator
Effort time 100%
Job Summary The Trial Nurse will be responsible for the accurate completion of visit procedures and collection of information from study participants according to protocol, and welfare of study participants
Roles:
- Identify potential study participants
- Consent and enroll eligible participants
- Conduct questionnaire interviews and conduct clinical reviews of study participants during enrollment
- Conduct follow-ups with study subjects and complete the follow-up logs as per the protocol.
- Take vital signs measurements
- Collect and prepare samples from study participants
- Dispense study and other medications
- Keep an organized laboratory log of all samples collected and transferred and document quality assurance procedures applied during sample management
- Perform adherence counselling and other counselling needed by the patients
- Perform other nursing duties such as organising the clinic, dusting, and patient cleaning whenever needed.
- Ensure proper filling of study and clinical records
- Manage clinical supplies at the study site
- Perform first-level quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) to ensure all fields in the consent forms and case report forms (CRFs) are complete and accurate
Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing
- Registration with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council with a valid Annual Practicing License (APL).
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements & Good Clinical Practices (GCP) is an added advantage
- Clinical trials research experience is an added advantage
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Job Title: Laboratory Technician (1)
Reports to: Study Coordinator and Laboratory Coordinator
Engagement: Fulltime
Duration: 1 year, renewable upon satisfactory performance
Job Summary: The laboratory technician will be responsible for collection of blood and other test specimens as requested by the doctors and clinicians. He/she will ensure that the specimens are delivered to the laboratory and analysed, and results delivered to the attending clinician/participant in a timely manner.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Review the study protocols and laboratory manuals.
- Accurately collect and label test specimens exactly as outlined in each clinic requisition as guided by the standard operating procedures
- Receive and assess sputum samples from patients
- Process and prepare collected specimens for laboratory testing
- Ensure all collected test specimens are packaged well, delivered to the lab and timely results delivered to the clinic.
- Maintain a register of all requested tests; follow up on all tests sent out and ensure there is a record of returned results in the register
- Assist in the compilation of data for the laboratory’s monthly reports
- Clean and maintain the work area and medical equipment
- Demonstrate excellent customer care and ensure timely processing of samples
- Coordinate queries between the clinic and the laboratory to ensure successful resolution.
- Develop SOPs for the lab
Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements & Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)
- Registration with the Allied Health Medical Professional Council with a valid Annual Practicing License (APL).
- IATA certification is an added advantage.
- Minimum of 2 years working experience in a busy clinical or medical research laboratory
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Analytical skills
